The Madrona

The newly restored exterior of the Mansion features a refurbishment of the original wrap-around porch.

Most Healdsburg residents know Madrona Manor as a beloved emblem of Healdsburg history boasting breathtaking views and nostalgic charm. The family property at the entrance of West Dry Creek was built in 1881 and converted into a restaurant and hotel in the 1980s.  Now, renowned San Francisco-based interior designer Jay Jeffers, who purchased the property in 2021 along with a group of investors, has ambitious plans to bring the property in line with the future of Healdsburg.  The history of the property was the initial draw, prompting Jeffers to begin a re-design that will realize the full potential of the property without losing connection to its storied roots. Newly renamed The Madrona, the 8-acre property will reopen later this Spring as a reimagined and rejuvenated 24-room hotel, with a restaurant, bar, event space and gardens.

Ashley Luna, Director of Food and Beverage

We toured the property with the affable Ashley Luna, a Sonoma County native who recently returned to become The Madrona’s Director of Food and Beverage.  Luna explained that the new hotel’s goal is to revitalize a beloved landmark and create a place for locals to explore and unwind while providing tourists with Healdsburg’s best hospitality experience. Nearly all amenities and services will be open to the public. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served seven days a week. Complimentary valet parking greets guests at a reimagined entrance via the newly expanded wrap-around porch. Locals and guests are invited to wander the property with a glass of wine, visit the extensive chef’s garden, enjoy a seat in one of the lounges, or enjoy a fresh-squeezed mimosa in the Citrus Grove.  Luna said “We hope this will be a place you get to know and feel at home. And that soon you’ll be the one giving this tour with your friends and family, because you’ll have your favorite spots on the property.”

The front porch will offer seating for a drink with sweeping views of Dry Creek Valley

First thing’s first: An expertly crafted cocktail at Hannah’s Bar awaits you at The Madrona’s entrance

The Madrona will feature a meticulously designed bar at the entrance of the historic mansion, hosting seven seats designed to preserve views through the home’s original floor-to-ceiling windows. Two adjacent parlors offer more interior seating where guests can enjoy a drink or small bites after work or prior to dinner. The upgraded wrap-around porch will also offer comfortable spaces where guests can snack, sip, and enjoy the view. These areas will not require a reservation and the intent is to make the property come alive, buzzing with effervescent chatter, energy, and chance meetings.  Jesse Mallgren, Madrona Manor’s Michelin Starred Chef, remains at the helm in the kitchen. The restaurant (reservations recommended) will seat approximately sixty-five people between the Main Dining room and the Palm Terrace. The Main Dining room’s design harks to a romantic era with a modern twist, featuring bubble chandeliers, taper candles with dripping wax, and the cozy juxtaposition of bright colors and warm textures.

In addition to the restaurant, parlor and bar offering full meals, small bites, and drinks daily, The Madrona also plans to host plenty of events for locals and visitors alike, such as movie nights on the main lawn. Mosey further past the main lawn, to find pineapple guava trees bordering an enchanting walkway that takes you to the sizable, ½ acre Chef’s Garden.  The regenerative farm will be seasonally planted with fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs to service Chef Mallgren’s menus.

Luna explained that Mr. Jeffers’ intent in designing something new, whether it be a private home for a family or a shared hospitality experience, is for the client to feel like they have already been there for twenty years, on day one.  His interiors aim to have a warm, collected, purposeful quality on move-in day. We cannot think of a better way to honor the ancestral spirit of the beloved landmark, for all to enjoy for generations to come.
